The Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology was established in 1983. It had been formerly operating since 1955 as the Chemistry Division of the former Institute of Nuclear Research. The Institute has an interdisciplinary character. The activities of the INCT include basic research, development and applications as well as various services related to the profile of its activities. The results INCT works have been implemented in various branches of national economy, particularly in industry, medicine, environmental protection and agriculture. Since the early sixties, the Institute has played a leading role in developing and implementing nuclear technologies, methods and instruments in the country. Nowadays the Institute is one of the most advanced centres in the field of:
- radiation chemistry and technology,
- application of nuclear methods in material engineering and process engineering,
- design and production of instruments based on nuclear techniques,
- radioanalytical techniques and
- environmental research.
Basic research is focussed on: radiochemistry, chemistry of isotopes, physical chemistry of separation processes, cellular radiobiology, and radiation chemistry, particularly that based on pulse radiolysis method. Nowadays with its nine electron accelerators in operation and with the staff experienced in the field of electron beam application, the Institute is one of the most advanced centers of science and technology in this domain. The Institute has four pilot plants:
- for radiation sterilization of medical devices and transplantation grafts;
- for radiation modification of polymers;
- for removal of SO2 and NOx from flue gases;
- for food sanitation.
The Institute has 8 research departments. It is editor of the scientific journal Nukleonika.
The major area of Department activity is research and development in the field of chemical, process and environmental engineering including:
- Application of radiotracers for fluid flow in industrial installations, air and water treatment plants testing employing CFD for unit operations modelling,
- Air pollution monitoring (particulates, SO2, NOx, VOC),
- Air pollution control (SO2, NOx, VOC,), especially electron beam flue gas treatment,
- Application of radiotracers, stable isotopes ratio (H, O, D) and tritium measurement for determination of water dispersion in open reservoirs, groundwater flow & mixing,
- Stable isotope analyses (food, environmental samples),
- Gas/liquid and gas/solid isotope exchange,
- Membrane processes (UF, RO, MD) – radioactive wastes processing, isotope effects investigation, separation of isotopes,
- Polyolefin Recycling,
- process- and production engineering for renewable energies (biogas, heat regenerative cells etc.)
