Institut für Oberflächen- und Dünnschichttechnik (IfOD)

The Institute of Surface and Thin Film Technology (IfOD - Institut für Oberflächen und Dünnschichttechnik) at the Wismar University of Technology, Business and Design (University of Applied Science) was founded in 1999 and aspires to become a centre of excellence for the regional small and medium-sized enterprises and industries in this specialised field of material engineering. It consists of teachers of Wismar University, scientific staff and technical employees which work together in a field of Surface Coating Technology, in a special field of materialresearch and technology. This scienseteam will be completed by thirdpayed scientifical and technical staff.

The Institute of Thin Film and Surface Coating Technology IfOD at the Wismar University was founded in 1999 by members of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. In this institute the experiences of the fields thin film technology, thermal spraying and polymer technology are brought together and the methods of metallography, mechanical and physical materialtesting and the electronic-optical analysing are centralisised for characterising materials and will be used in a high scientifical level. The main emphasis of the work in the IfOD is put on development and characterising of new, functional materials and material combination although technologies to produce them. A great aspect of the strategic management of the work is to develop new materials for the chemical sensoric. Therefore the IfOD gets help from regional enterprises. This cooperation wants to develop innovative products.
