Surface technology

The Advanced Surface Technology Research Laboratory (ASTRaL) is a research unit of Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) specialising in surface technology, in particular thin film deposition and surface modification. ASTRaL is part of Mikkeli Coatings and Composites Research Centre (MCCRC) and is located on the campus of Mikkeli Polytechnic. Our expertise in basic and applied research supports the application of leading edge technologies that are essential for industries to develop innovative solutions and value added products. Our aim is also to educate the highly skilled professionals at doctoral and master’s level who can answer the industrial challenges of the future.

Surface analysis

• Characterisation of the mechanical, structural, chemical and optical properties of thin films and modified surfaces.
